WINSTON, ITSELF:

setup.winstonprivacy.com - doesn't recognize that Winston is connected properly even when it is

  • Issue: Some users have Winston connected properly, but intermittently the http://setup.winstonprivacy.com/welcome page indicates that Winston is not found.
  • Interim work-around: In most cases, Winston is either rebooting after an update to the firmware, or is actually not installed properly and the user should follow the troubleshooting steps found here. If, however, the user is able to access the Winston dashboard at http://winston.conf (not https), Winston is correctly connected and set up properly. The only remaining step for the user is to download the extensions available here.
  • Long-term resolution plan: With improvements in the speed of loading winston.conf in firmware release 1.1.1, we anticipate this issue to be resolved.

Winston Dashboard - download speed not showing

  • Issue: For some users, the Total Bandwidth Over Time graph does not show Download speed since the 1.0.6 firmware update
  • Interim work-around: None. But please note that download speed is not used for anything functional in Winston.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are currently investigating.

Winston Dashboard - slowness

  • Issue: The Winston dashboard sometimes loads slowly and navigating from one page to the other times out. This is often found in large, active networks with a lot of data for Winston to process before loading pages.
  • Interim work-around: None at this time, other than patience.
  • Long-term resolution plan: Load time is improve in firmware release 1.1.1. Long term, we are porting the dashboard to a dedicated server (it will continue to run locally in your browser. No data will ever leave your network.) This change will dramatically improve page load speed of the dashboard.

Winston Dashboard - PIN recovery does not work

  • Issue: If a user forgets their Dashboard PIN, the recovery process does not allow them to reset it.
  • Interim work-around: Please contact us for manual reset instructions.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We will include a new method of handling PIN recovery in the in a future release to resolve this issue.

Winston Dashboard - a search for an Allowed Site does not terminate when there are no results

  • Issue: When searching for a domain at http://winston.conf/pages/privacy, when the domain is not found, the search never returns "no results found" and continues indefinitely.
  • Interim work-around: If the search never ends, there was no result. Delete your search term or refresh the page (CTRL+R) to reload the page.
  • Long-term resolution plan: This will be resolved in the next dashboard release.

Computer says it is not connected to internet, but is connected

  • Issue: Some Windows 10 computers indicate they are not connected to the internet, either in the "available network list" or with a yellow triangle icon over the WiFi symbol in the tray, even though they are are connected, and the user is able to browse the web. Users are still able to reach the Windows 10 status page at http://www.msftncsi.com/ncsi.txtwhich, which returns a tiny text message, "Microsoft NCSI".
  • Interim work-around: Note that the "not connected" notification relies on the ability to ping a specific Microsoft domain, not actual ability to interact with the rest of the internet. Confirm that these three domains are in your Allowed list (via http://winston.conf/pages/privacy): dns.msftncsi.com, msftncsi.com, and www.msftncsi.com. If all else fails, Turn off the "Winston Windows 10 Privacy Filters" in the Third Party Filters section of http://winston.conf/pages/privacy, until this issue is permanently resolved.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are continuing to research this issue.

General slowness and connectivity issues

  • Issue: Some users, especially those with large networks, are experiencing general internet slowness and some connectivity interruptions. This is due to resource contention on the device.
  • Interim work-around: Temporarily disabling the privacy mesh network is known to result in a marked improvement in symptoms.
  • Long-term resolution plan: Some improvements have already been identified and will be shipped in Firmware v1.1.1. We are continuing to research this issue.

SPECIFIC OTHER DEVICES:

Amazon Echo - drops its connection intermittently

  • Issue: Some users have reported that Echo Dot and Plus have short blips in connectivity when there is active interaction with the device, but reconnects automatically.
  • Interim work-around: Some users have found that waiting a few moments and attempting to interact with Echo again is sufficient until a longer-term resolution is found. A more solid, but temporary, solution is to turn off Port 80 and Port 443 Interception. We do not recommend leaving these off permanently.
  • Long-term resolution plan: Though difficult to reproduce, we have identified a likely cause and believe that this issue will be resolved in Firmware v1.1.1.

Apple Airport Routers - cannot load the Winston dashboard

  • Issue: Some users are able to access the internet, but cannot load the Winston dashboard at http://winston.conf when traffic is routed through an Apple Airport router.
  • Interim work-around: Instructions have been provided here.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are continuing to research this issue.

Arlo Security Cameras - unstable connection to the internet

  • Issue: The internet connection to the cameras is unstable.
  • Interim work-around: Some users have found that whitelisting these domains resolves the issue: compute.amazonaws.com, vz.netgear.com, mcs.arlo.com, messaging.arlo.com
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are testing to determine whether the 1.1.1 firmware release will resolve this issue.

Cisco SG200-26 26-port Gigabit Smart Switch - connected devices fail to connect to the internet

  • Issue: In this connection order, devices connected to this switch do not connect to the internet: wall jack -> modem -> router -> Cisco switch -> devices
  • Interim work-around: None at this time
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are researching this issue.

Helm - NextCloud client does not work for mobile

  • Issue: The NextCloud client works for Windows, but not iOS or Android.
  • Interim work-around: None at this time.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are researching this issue.

pfSense firewall/router - cannot maintain a DHCP lease from Winston

  • Issue: We have a report from a user whose network is connected as follows, whose pfSense firewall/router cannot hang on to a DHCP lease from Winston, Winston keeps dropping the connection, and pfSense issues an "ARPREQUEST: can not find matching address" error message: FIOS ISP --> Winston--> pfSense -->Home network
  • Interim work-around: None at this time.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are researching this issue.

Samsung TVs - no or unstable connection to the internet

  • Issue: Some Samsung TVs either do not connect to the internet or do not maintain a connection.
  • Interim work-around: Some users have found that whitelisting these domains resolves the issue: cdn.samsungcloudsolution.com and time.samsungcloudsolution.com. Others are able to connect to the internet after either temporarily or indefinitely turning Port 80 Interception Off. We do not recommend permanently turning Port 80 Interception off, but you may choose to do so until a long-term solution is found.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are continuing research to find a long term solution.

Sonos/Pandora - Pandora doesn't work on Sonos, specifically

  • Issue: Sonos doesn't acknowledge connection to Pandora while on the Winston network. This issue is specific to use of Pandora on Sonos versus other devices. Stations don't appear, and the user receives an error message: "Unable to play - access is denied"
  • Interim work-around: None at this time.
  • Long-term resolution plan: This is likely resolve in Firmware v1.1.1.

Xbox - will not connect to Xbox live

  • Issue: For some users, Xbox indicates it is connected to the internet, but will not connect to Xbox live.
  • Interim work-around: For some users, these steps resolve the issue: Ensure whitelist device.auth.xboxlive.com is whitelisted. Clear the Xbox cache:
  1. Turn off your Xbox One.
  2. Once the indicator lights on the front of the Xbox One and the console’s power brick are off, unplug the power adapter from the back of your console.
  3. Wait at least 30 seconds.
  4. Plug the power brick adapter into your Xbox One and turn the Xbox One on.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are continuing to research the cause of this issue, which affects a very small number of users.

SPECIFIC WEBSITES AND APPLICATIONS

NOTE: Certain applications and websites will require domains to be whitelisted in order to fully function properly. It is your choice to use those sites or not. This is not an issue with Winston, but a requirement of the way those apps and sites work. For your convenience, we provide a list of domains we have found that need to be whitelisted in order for some sites to function properly, here. Remember that using the Winston Browser Extension allows you to easily "Allow" sites on the fly for uninterrupted browsing.

Facebook iOS app - various functions not loading

  • Issue: Some pages don't load properly, including the Menu, feed in Most Recent order, user's own Profile page, and some articles or video.
  • Interim work-around: Whitelisting graph.facebook.com resolves these issues.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are determining whether any of the connection improvements in the 1.1.1 firmware release will resolve this issue without whitelisting graph.facebook.com.

Office 365 - cannot connect

  • Issue: Office 365 will not open or activate and indicates that it has either encountered a server error or needs an internet connection, even when one exists.
  • Interim work-around: Please ensure you have the latest browser extension and try using Office 365 with that browser. Otherwise, try these options, one at a time:

1) Whitelist/Allow these domains in Allowed Sites: http://winston.conf/pages/privacy:

  • outlook.office365.com
  • products.office.com
  • c.s-microsoft.com
  • i.s-microsoft.com
  • login.live.com
  • login.microsoftonline.com

2) Disable Port 443 Interception (in Advanced Settings: http://winston.conf/pages/privacy). Some users have found that Office 365 continues to work after Port 443 Interception is turned back on.

3) Disable the Winston Windows 10 Privacy Filters in the Third Party Filters section of http://winston.conf/pages/privacy.

  • Long-term resolution plan: We believe this is resolved with the recent 1.1.0.1 browser extension release and are testing to confirm resolution.

Netflix - does not maintain a stable connection

  • Issue: For some users, Netflix loses its connection intermittently.
  • Interim work-around: Some users have found that turning off the Distributed Privacy Mesh Network following the steps below, even temporarily, resolves this issue. Please note that we do not recommend keeping the mesh network disabled permanently, as this eliminates Winston anonymization:
    1. Visit http://winston.conf (not https) on a computer connected to your Winston network
    2. Click on the Privacy Settings tab
    3. Click on Advanced Settings
    4. Untoggle Enable Privacy Mesh Network
    5. Click Save Settings
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are continuing to research the source of this issue.

Pandora on Sonos: see above under Sonos

  • Interim work-around: Whitelisting feelinsonice.com seems to resolve this issue for some users.
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are continuing to research the source of this issue.

Trend Micro Maximum Security - cannot connect to the internet

  • Issue: Trend Micro displays an error indicating it cannot connect to the internet.
  • Interim work-around: Disable Port 443 Interception (in Advanced Settings: http://winston.conf/pages/privacy).
  • Long-term resolution plan: We are continuing to research the source of this issue.
